MTV ferme plusieurs de ses chaînes musicales : est-ce la fin définitive des clips à la télé ?
In the UK, MTV has just announced the closure of all its music channels by the end of the year. Similar measures could be taken in other countries.
It's the end of an era. We still remember those long afternoons spent in front of MTV, fascinated by the endless stream of music videos of the moment. At any moment, we could come across Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or Outkast's "Hey Ya!" Even today, the images of certain songs remain etched in our memories and remain inseparable from the music.
The television channel has forever marked several generations and transformed the entire music industry.
MTV has been losing ground for many years, especially since the rise of streaming platforms that have revolutionized the way we consume and listen to music. To counter this revolution, the network is trying to resist by focusing more and more on reality TV. Today, MTV continues to bet on nostalgia by recycling its old programs like Teen Mom or Jersey Shore and by broadcasting old series like The Big Bang Theory .
And this shift in strategy is only set to intensify. In the UK, MTV will stop streaming music videos after 40 years, shutting down five of its music channels. MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will disappear from the small screen next December, the BBC has just announced.
Simone Angel, former presenter of MTV Europe and MTV UK, shared her disappointment at the decision, even though it was expected. "We need to support these artists and we all need to dance again and listen to music ," she told the BBC. "I know we're doing it online, each in our own little bubbles, but MTV was the place where everything came together. It really breaks my heart."
For the presenter, the channel remains relevant today, even if the consumption of clips has shifted to other media, such as YouTube or social networks. "To this day, MTV remains one of the most recognized brands in the world. Why throw it away? It's not completely lost, but now it's mostly reality TV. That's not what MTV is, nor what it should be ," she argued.
According to the British press, Paramount, MTV's parent company, is also expected to shut down music channels in other countries, such as Australia, Brazil, Poland, and France. These decisions are part of a strategy to cut costs by $500 million worldwide. Paramount has not yet issued an official statement.
