The Council of Press Distributors and Publishers of Senegal (CDEPS) expressed in a statement its full solidarity with its former president, Madiambal Diagne, who was forced to leave Senegal following a threat of arrest. In a statement released today, the CDEPS denounced the violence of the judicial and police proceedings initiated against the journalist, who was preparing to board a flight to France. "The manner and violence used to prevent him from leaving the country and his subsequent summons to appear before a police station forced him to move to France to prepare his defense," the statement said.
The CDEPS "is shocked by the violence with which judicial and police proceedings have been initiated against our colleague," describing these acts as "a worrying concern for the freedom of citizens and the press." The organization notes that CDEPS member companies are experiencing economic difficulties aggravated by "unfair and illegal measures to undermine their financial health," and that the threat against Madiambal Diagne constitutes a "dangerous situation for freedoms and the press in particular." "The CDEPS stands in total solidarity with Mr. Diagne and provides him with strong support in this ordeal," the statement concludes, calling for respect for fundamental rights.
