ANACIM : la DG de la Météo vote pour une réforme majeure
The Meteorological Directorate is a branch within the organizational structure of the National Civil Aviation and Meteorology Agency (ANACIM). The time has come to separate it from this structure. This is the proposal of the Director General of Meteorology, Dr. Aïda Ndiongue Niang. "I support the principle of separation," she argued in an interview published this Monday in L'Observateur. "Today, the government is talking about pooling resources among agencies, but the meteorological service deserves to be autonomous. The 'Meteorological Service' entity has existed in Senegal since 1903 within the framework of French West Africa (AOF)."
But the head of the weather service recommends caution. "A separation requires preparation," she says, suggesting that a business model must first be found to finance the activities of the entity that would emerge from the split.
“Today, the weather service in Senegal is primarily funded by civil aviation revenues,” Dr. Niang points out. “It should be noted that meteorological services worldwide are mainly funded by aeronautical fees and direct or indirect contributions from governments.”
The Director of Meteorology added: "The funding for meteorology must be discussed and agreed upon before proceeding with the return of the national meteorological agency. To do this, the principle of separating the civil aviation and meteorological administrations must first be ratified."
