Décès de Leïla Shahid, ancienne représentante de la Palestine en France, Le Monde évoque un sucide
Diplomat Leila Shahid, former representative of Palestine to France and the European Union, died on Wednesday, her sister Zeina told AFP, confirming a report in the daily newspaper Le Monde.
"Yes, she died today," she said, without specifying the circumstances of her death.
According to Le Monde, Leila Shahid, 76, who had been seriously ill for several years, committed suicide at her home in Lecques (Gard), in the south of France.
Leila Shahid was the General Delegate of the Palestinian Authority in France from 1994 to 2005, before holding the same position in Brussels during the following decade.
The current Palestinian ambassador to France, Hala Abou-Hassira, hailed her on X as "an iconic ambassador", lamenting "a huge loss for Palestine, and for the world that believes in justice".
Born in 1949 in Lebanon, Leila Shahid was the first woman to represent the PLO, led by Yasser Arafat, abroad.
She began her career in Ireland in 1989, before combining this role the following year with that of representative in the Netherlands where she settled.
She was among the first Palestinians to establish contact with pro-peace Israelis.
Ms. Shahid completed her secondary education in Lebanon, then earned a degree in anthropology from the American University of Beirut. She was married to a Moroccan writer.
