Décès d’Ababacar Sedikh Sy, fondateur et PDG du Groupe Supdeco Dakar
The Senegalese education community is in mourning. Ababacar Sedikh Sy, CEO and founder of the Supdeco Dakar Group, has passed away, leaving behind a significant legacy in the fields of higher education and private sector development in Senegal.
A native of Saint-Louis, Mr. Sy distinguished himself early on by his academic excellence. A brilliant student in his hometown, he was nicknamed "Sy Larousse" by his history and geography teacher, Professor Alpha Datt, because of his erudition. His classmates in France called him "Sy la science." After graduating with honors, he continued his studies in scientific preparatory classes in Brest, before joining ISTOM in Le Havre, where he obtained a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Economics and Management, published in the Official Journal of the French Republic.
He then continued his academic studies at the University of Haute-Alsace in Mulhouse, from where he graduated with several diplomas in transport and logistics, international trade and a DEA in marketing, all obtained with honors.
Back in Senegal, Ababacar Sedikh Sy had an exemplary career in the private sector. He held several high-level positions: executive at Socopao-Senegal (now Bolloré Africa Logistics), sales director of the SOMICOA-Smith and Kraft group, transit director at Express Transit, sales director of Manutrans International, and then deputy marketing director at Sotiba-Simpafric, a company that at the time had a turnover of 18 billion CFA francs.
A visionary and entrepreneur, he went on to create the Sylex firm, specializing in marketing and communications, before founding the Supdeco Dakar Group, Senegal's first business school, in 1993. Under his leadership, Supdeco has established itself as a benchmark in West Africa, training several generations of executives and managers.
Committed to private sector development, Mr. Sy served on numerous national and regional institutions. He was notably a member of the Presidential Investment Council, Vice-President of the Dakar Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, a director of the ONFP and the CNES, a member of the National Credit Council of the BCEAO, the Supervisory Board of the Dakar Commercial Court, ANAQ-Sup and the Franco-Senegalese Campus. He also chaired the Conférence des Grandes Écoles and the Private Sector Foundation for Education.
A great sports enthusiast, he was honorary president of Linguère de Saint-Louis, which he led for eleven years, leading the club to victory in the Senegal Cup and the national championship. He was also an active member of the Senegalese Football Federation and the Tennis Federation.
Recognized for his commitment and contribution to national development, Ababacar Sedikh Sy has been decorated several times. Commander of the National Order of Merit in 2008, Knight of the National Order of the Lion in 2015, then promoted to Officer of the same order in 2023, he was also honored with various distinctions, including the title of "Personality of the Year" in Saint-Louis and the prestigious "Lat Dior d'Or" awarded by UNACOIS Jappo.
Ababacar Sedikh Sy leaves behind the memory of a builder, a passionate educator and a patriot committed to the youth and development of Senegal.
