Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar is in mourning. Professor Moustapha Kassé, an emblematic figure of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026.
In a public statement, the National Executive Secretariat (SEN) of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) offered its condolences to the bereaved family, the university and student communities, and "to the Senegalese people who have lost one of their most brilliant minds".
A respected elder and father of Mamadou Kassé, an APR executive, Professor Kassé leaves "a huge void in both academic and intellectual circles," the party wrote in the statement.
Moustapha Kassé, one of the first graduates in economics from CAMES, dedicated his life to education, research and the promotion of the African university.
During his career, he held high responsibilities including president of the Conference of Educational and Research Institutions in Africa (CIEREA), founding member and then president of the Board of Directors of the Inter-University Postgraduate Program (PTCI).
Moustapha Kassé was also Minister-Counselor for NEPAD to the President of the Republic, and Coordinating President of the juries for the CAMES competitive examination for professorships in legal, political, economic and management sciences.
Professor Kassé was also "a prolific researcher and committed intellectual whose work profoundly influenced African economic thinking".
Recognized far beyond the borders of Senegal, he "left his mark on generations of students and made a significant contribution to the national economic debate throughout his career".
