Her death sparked a wave of emotion in Hollywood. Actress Catherine O'Hara died on January 30 at the age of 71 from a pulmonary embolism, according to her death certificate reviewed Monday by ABC News.

According to the American news network, the Canadian-American actress suffered from colorectal cancer, which was mentioned as an underlying cause of her death. Pulmonary embolism occurs when an artery in the lungs is blocked, often by a blood clot, according to the French National Health Insurance website.

The multi-award-winning actress had never publicly disclosed any health problems.

Nominated for a Golden Globe in 2026

Catherine O'Hara is particularly known for her roles in comedies. She played Kevin's (Macaulay Culkin) mother in "Home Alone" (1990) and the character of Delia in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" (1988).

More recently, the actress starred in "The Studio" (2025) on Apple TV+, a satirical series about the Hollywood film industry, which earned her a 2026 Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress.

Awarded numerous times throughout her career, Catherine O'Hara won two Emmy Awards in 1982 and 2020 for her role in the sitcom "Schitt's Creek" (2015). For this series, she also received a Golden Globe for "Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy".

The star left behind two sons born from her union with director Bo Welch, whom she met on the set of "Beetlejuice".
