Yankhoba Sagna, former mayor of Sindian (Bignona department), died yesterday, Sunday, at the Principal Hospital in Dakar after a long illness. Around sixty years old, he was nicknamed "Burabé" by his loved ones, a name literally meaning "the sun has risen, let's go to work," which is also the name of his political movement.

Before entering politics, Yankhoba Sagna served for a long time as an administrative executive, notably holding the position of Director of General Affairs and Equipment (DAGE) at the Ministry of National Education.

His political involvement truly began in early 2014 with the creation of his "Burabé" movement. He then allied himself with the ruling party at the time, the APR (party of former President Macky Sall), and won the local elections that year, becoming mayor of the commune of Sindian, a position he held from 2014 to 2022.

However, his alliance with the APR will experience a break following the political events of 2021. Yankhoba Sagna openly criticizes his allies regarding their position towards Ousmane Sonko and PASTEF.

This critical stance led him to leave the ruling coalition and ally with Geum Sa Bopp in the 2022 local and municipal elections. It was at this time that he defined himself as an "ally of truth", but he lost the mayoralty of Sindian.

In 2023, he sided with PASTEF and publicly supported Ousmane Sonko in the Bignona department, even going so far as to "dissolve" his movement into that party. He aligned himself with Yancoba Diémé, the current Minister of Land and Air Transport and coordinator of Sonko's party in that department.

Yankhoba Sagna "Burabé" had withdrawn from the political scene for more than two years following his illness, which claimed his life on Sunday, December 7.

The body was removed from the morgue at Dakar's Main Hospital on Sunday. The funeral is scheduled for Monday, December 8th, in Bignona.
