Moda Thioune : « Mes 15 jours à Rebeuss m’ont ... »
In an interview with L'Observateur, Senegalese actor Moda Thioune, who became famous for his role in the series Baabel, discussed his arrest, his imprisonment and the lessons he learned from them.
On August 10, the actor was arrested during a routine check in Zac Mbao. Without a license and with expired insurance, he attempted to flee. He deeply regrets the decision, saying it was "the first time in [his] life" that he had had any dealings with the law.
A difficult prison reality
Although he suffered from the deprivation of liberty, the interviewee for the Groupe avenirs médias daily newspaper believes that his 15 days in detention taught him "the equivalent of 15 years of experience." Greeted with respect by his fellow inmates, great admirers of Baabel, he confided that the series was considered "sacred" in prison, to the point that silence was imposed during its broadcast.
Beyond his popularity, the actor was struck by the faith, dignity, and solidarity of some inmates. However, he denounced the overcrowding at Rebeuss prison—3,700 prisoners for a capacity of 900—as well as the excessive length of pretrial detention, which, according to him, "shatters lives."
Significant meetings and a plea
Among the inmates who had an impact on him, Moda Thioune cited MS, originally from Saint-Louis, who looked after him throughout his stay, as well as the singer Soriba, whose fate had a profound impact on him.
He also paid tribute to the sympathy and humanity of the prison staff. Drawing on this experience, he called on the authorities to thoroughly reform the prison system, denouncing the lack of attention paid to certain investigations and the lack of involvement of certain lawyers.
Marked by this ordeal, Moda Thioune is committed to taking action for his former fellow inmates. With the Baabel team, he plans to organize visits, distribute donations, and use his art to give voice to the prisoners, in the hope that the authorities will "finally hear their suffering."

Tu fais une bêtise, on t’emprisonne et tu veux en faire un parcours héroïque.
On ne souhaite à personne la prison mais si cela t’arrive par ta propre faute, il faut être humble et rester dans son coin.

Voilà quelqu’un qui se relève et qui tire de cette épreuve
quelque chose de bien. Maintenant il tend la main à l’autre. Et en passant il a le courage de dénoncer les conditions carcérales.
Naturellement cela ne le dédouane pour rien de la faute
qu’il a commise mais lui au moins il a appris.
