Aminata Touré : « Pastef n'a pas élu seul le président »
The High Representative of the Head of State, Aminata Touré, addressed concerns about a potential popular backlash following the falling out between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko. In an interview with the foreign press, she stated that it would be an oversimplification to attribute the 2024 presidential victory solely to the Pastef party. "Pastef did not elect the president alone," she emphasized, noting that the Diomaye President coalition comprised several political and civic forces. According to her, parties such as the Senegalese Democratic Party also contributed to the electoral victory that enabled Bassirou Diomaye Faye to secure over 54% of the vote in the first round. Aminata Touré believes this reality must be considered in analyzing the current situation. She maintains that the normal functioning of institutions must now take precedence over debates related to political power dynamics. "The political game must take its course: the executive carries out its program, the National Assembly votes on laws and the justice system does its job," she said, highlighting the climate of stability that she said prevailed in the country.
A decision falling within the prerogatives of the head of state
When questioned about the fact that Ousmane Sonko's departure and the dissolution of the government were not a popular demand, Aminata Touré responded by invoking constitutional law. "I suggest you reread the Senegalese Constitution," she stated, reminding everyone that the President of the Republic has the exclusive power to appoint and dismiss the Prime Minister and members of the government. According to her, Bassirou Diomaye Faye's decision falls squarely within the prerogatives granted to him by the Constitution. If the Head of State deems it necessary to renew his government team, "the law authorizes him to do so," she insisted. The supervisor of the Diomaye President coalition thus believes that the President's legitimacy derives directly from universal suffrage and the majority that brought him to power, composed of political activists, citizens without party affiliation, and the various components of the victorious coalition.
"The Senegalese people do not want political wars."
Beyond the controversies sparked by the power struggle at the highest levels of government, Aminata Touré maintains that the population's primary concerns remain economic and social. According to her, Senegalese citizens are more interested in addressing the cost of living, youth employment, healthcare, and economic development than in perpetual political infighting. "Senegalese people do not want to get bogged down in petty political battles," she concluded, reaffirming her conviction that institutional stability and the continuation of reforms must remain the current priorities.
