Arrestation de Maimouna Ndour Faye et de Babacar Fall : Le PDS dénonce une atteinte grave à la liberté de la presse
The Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) reacted strongly to the arrest of Maimouna Ndour Faye, director of the 7TV channel, and Babacar Fall, editor-in-chief of RFM radio. In a public statement, the PDS expressed its deep concern and firmly condemned the circumstances of these arrests, which took place in the journalists' offices while they were carrying out their duties.
The PDS emphasizes that these arrests came about following interviews given to a politician presumed innocent, neither tried nor convicted, which, according to the party, raises serious questions about respect for freedom of the press and the fundamental guarantees enshrined in the Senegalese Constitution.
"In a democracy, the role of journalists is essential. They must be able to carry out their mission in complete independence, without fear of reprisals or undue pressure," the PDS reminds us.
The statement also denounces the appalling treatment of journalists, particularly Maimouna Ndour Faye, citing the violence of the images broadcast and the obstruction of her rights to a defense, as one of her lawyers was prevented from seeing her. These practices are deemed unacceptable and incompatible with the principles of the rule of law.
The PDS calls for strict respect for individual and collective freedoms, while also urging judicial and governmental authorities to address the seriousness of these abuses. The party further calls on human rights organizations, professional associations, and civil society to remain vigilant in the face of the gradual erosion of freedoms in Senegal.
Finally, the PDS expresses its full solidarity with the detained journalists and technician, and demands their immediate release, in compliance with procedures and their dignity.
