Assemblée : Marième Mbacké (PASTEF) charge Abdourahmane Diouf, "pire ministre de l'histoire.."
The fire that broke out at Lac des Maristes continues to provoke a wave of indignation and anger. While residents denounce an ecological and health disaster, MP Marième Mbacké of the PASTEF majority party launched a scathing attack on the Minister of the Environment, Abdourahmane Diouf, during the plenary session this Friday, May 8, 2026, at the National Assembly. The parliamentarian accused him of inaction and incompetence in the face of the situation.
The parliamentarian believes that the fire at Lake Maristes constitutes an "environmental disaster" which, in her view, reveals the authorities' failure to protect this natural area. "The fire at Lake Maristes is an environmental disaster. I never had any hope for Minister Abdourahmane Diouf, but I never thought he could sacrifice the richest heritage of this region in this way," she declared bitterly.
A frontal attack on political management
The MP not only criticized the technical handling of the disaster; she also condemned the minister's political stance. "You are paid by the Senegalese taxpayer to work, not to insult Sonko all day long," Marième Mbacké declared, in a direct jab at the government official.
She described an alarming situation around the site, mentioning worrying health impacts for local residents. "The lake has caught fire, birds are falling, asthmatic children and elderly people are in the hospital," she denounced, to emphasize the urgency of the situation.
The parliamentarian also questioned the effectiveness of the authorities' interventions on the ground. According to her, the minister's visit was nothing more than a pointless public relations exercise. "You drove around with your convoy of vehicles, but that's disrespectful," she insisted.
In her statement, she demanded that management of the site be transferred from the current authorities to the municipality. "If you and the OLAC (Office of Lakes and Waterways) can't do anything, then hand the lake back to the town hall," she asserted. Marième Mbacké concluded her remarks by calling Abdourahmane Diouf "the worst Minister of the Environment in the history of Senegal," even urging him to "resign" if his incompetence is proven.
