Candidature à l'ONU : Les deux gros handicaps de Macky Sall
Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is seeking the position of UN Secretary-General. While this candidacy is not unanimously supported within the Senegalese government, which criticizes him for his repression during his term and the alleged hidden debt, Macky Sall faces two major institutional disadvantages.
Indeed, as Jeune Afrique points out, the UN has a custom of rotating the Secretary-General's office geographically, although no official rule stipulates this. For the next Secretary-General, this rotation favors South America, which has not had a Secretary-General since the departure of Peruvian Javier Pérez de Cuéllar (1982-1991). Africa, on the other hand, has had two Secretaries-General, the most recent being Ghanaian Kofi Annan, who led the organization from 1997 to 2006.
The other obstacle for Macky Sall is that UN bodies have explicitly stated their desire to elect a woman. The UN has never had a female Secretary-General in its history and wants to change that. In fact, an official campaign called "Madame SG" has been launched by the "GWL Voices" (Global Women Leaders) organization, composed of former diplomats. The Future Summit, held in New York in September 2024, also advocated for a female candidate. "It is high time to take into account, in the upcoming selection and nomination processes, the regrettable fact that there has never been a female Secretary-General," reads the preparatory document.
