Candidature de Macky Sall à l’ONU : Alioune Tine appelle à dépasser les clivages internes
While the prospect of former Senegalese President Macky Sall running for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations is causing heated controversy on the national political scene, Alioune Tine, president of the Afrikajom Center think tank, calls for the debate to be placed in a broader perspective, beyond internal considerations.
Acknowledging the existence of strong political tensions in Senegal around this possibility, the former president of RADDHO (African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights) believes, however, that the debate cannot be limited to national divisions alone.
For him, the international dimension and the diplomatic issues linked to such a candidacy must be fully taken into account, particularly with regard to Africa's place in global governance bodies.
Alioune Tine points out that, within the framework of UN mechanisms, applications for strategic positions often follow logics of regional or continental consensus.
Therefore, if Macky Sall were to be designated as Africa's consensus candidate, this decision would bind all the states of the continent, beyond the internal political debates specific to each country.
In this context, he believes Senegal has a responsibility to support this candidacy, not out of internal political affiliation, but in the name of African solidarity and the continent's higher diplomatic interests. Such a position, he argues, would be more a matter of strategic choice than partisan alignment.
