Candidature de Macky Sall à l’ONU : « Une chance pour l’Afrique », selon Seydou Guèye
Former Senegalese President Macky Sall is considering a run for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). His supporters present this prospect as a historic opportunity for Africa and for Senegal. Interviewed by the "Sunday Jury" program on Iradio, Seydou Guèye stated that this candidacy marks an unprecedented step in the continent's diplomatic history. "For the first time, a former African head of state is running for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations," he emphasized. According to him, the candidacy was put forward at the continental level by the African Union, through the current presidency held by Burundi. This support, according to his advocates, demonstrates recognition of the role played by Macky Sall on the international stage.
During his years in power, the former Senegalese head of state held several major diplomatic positions, notably the presidency of the African Union and that of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). His supporters also highlight his commitment to several global issues: managing the Covid-19 pandemic, defending African interests in international debt negotiations, and diplomatic mediation in certain crises. "Macky Sall embodies credible leadership, capable of contributing to the balance of the international system," asserts Seydou Guèye.
In a context of increasing geopolitical tensions, his supporters believe that his profile as a former head of state, from a country relatively neutral in major international rivalries, could be an asset for global mediation.
The former president also distinguished himself through his advocacy for a more balanced new world order, particularly in favor of greater African representation on the UN Security Council. “Two-thirds of the issues discussed in the General Assembly concern Africa. Having a Secretary-General from the continent can help to better amplify its priorities,” explains Seydou Guèye. However, the election of the next UN Secretary-General is based on a complex diplomatic process. The candidate must first be recommended by the Security Council, dominated by its five permanent members, before being confirmed by the General Assembly. Despite these uncertainties, Macky Sall's supporters believe that his experience, diplomatic network, and understanding of global issues make him a credible candidate for the position.
