Congrès de Pastef : Ousmane Sonko élu premier président du parti à l'unanimité
This Saturday, during the first ordinary congress of Pastef-Les Patriotes, delegates from Senegal and the diaspora officially elected their historic leader, Ousmane Sonko, as president of the party.
The election marks a symbolic turning point for the political party which, since its creation in 2014, had never held an ordinary congress to formally designate its president in accordance with its new internal rules.
In front of the delegates, officials from the party's High Authority for Regulation and Ethics (HAREP) detailed a process which they presented as transparent, inclusive and democratic.
According to the explanations provided, the organization of the congress stems from a decision of the National Council taken on March 15, 2026. Following this convocation, a call for applications was opened to allow any activist fulfilling the required conditions to run for the presidency of the party.
After reviewing the submitted applications, only one candidacy was deemed admissible: that of Ousmane Sonko. Officials from the electoral body emphasized that this was not a privilege granted to the party leader but the result of a process open to all party members.
A vote prepared from the ground up
True to its internal organization, Pastef chose to make the decision from the grassroots sections.
The 553 national sections, as well as the diaspora sections, were called upon to organize general assemblies in order to mandate their delegates. These delegates were tasked with representing the will expressed by the members at the congress.
According to the figures released, the official reports submitted by the local branches in Senegal all mandated their delegates to vote for Ousmane Sonko. The same observation was made regarding the diaspora branches, where all 36 recognized branches also expressed their support for the single candidate.
In accordance with the democratic principles adopted by the party, a blank ballot had nevertheless been provided in order to allow an alternative to voting in favour of the candidate.
A crowning achievement for the founder
This election represents the culmination of a political journey that began in January 2014 in a room at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, when a few young executives decided to create a movement that would gradually establish itself as one of the main political forces in the country.
For the activists gathered at this first congress, Ousmane Sonko's official accession to the presidency of Pastef carries strong symbolic weight. It recognizes the man who has championed the party's political project since its creation, navigated periods of crisis, led major electoral battles, and guided Pastef's rise to national power.
Amid enthusiastic applause from the delegates, the vote confirmed what had already seemed a political certainty to the party's base: the party's founder officially became its first president elected by a congress. This marks a historic step in the life of Pastef, which now opens a new chapter in its organization and political evolution.
