The development of the private sector and the revival of the national economy were central to the discussions at Wednesday's Council of Ministers meeting. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye issued several directives to the government.

“Following the inaugural session of the Strategic Council of the Presidential Initiative SunuChampions, which he chaired on April 28, 2026, the President of the Republic welcomes this inclusive, proactive and pragmatic initiative. He asks the Government, public structures and all umbrella organizations of the private sector to support its effective implementation,” according to the press release from the Council of Ministers, dated Wednesday, May 6.

The Head of State indicated the need to act on several fronts. These include finalizing, before the end of June 2026, the draft framework law on economic patriotism, strengthening the development of scientific fields and the intensive deployment of vocational and technical training programs in colleges, accelerating reforms to improve the business environment with the finalization of the draft Customs Code and General Tax Code, and intensifying the processes of simplifying and digitizing administrative procedures through the systematization of one-stop shops.

 

Domestic debt, construction and public works, and financing of the economy

 

Even better, the President of the Republic also addressed "the clearing of domestic debt, the revival of the Building and Public Works (BTP) sector, the implementation of the National Strategy for the Promotion of Investment and Development of the Private Sector and the deployment of the new industrial policy of Senegal".

Finally, Diomaye Faye recommends "initiating consultations on the financing of the economy, including proposals relating to the establishment of a national banking system for financing development."
