Révision de la Constitution : Vague d’interpellations devant l’Assemblée nationale
Tensions escalated on Monday near the National Assembly, where several figures from civil society and the opposition were arrested while demonstrating against the proposed constitutional amendment. The mobilization against the constitutional revision resulted in several arrests on Monday in front of Parliament.
According to our information, Babacar Ba, president of the Forum of the Justiciable, was arrested by the defense and security forces a few meters from the parliament building. He had gone there to express his opposition to the proposed law being examined by the members of parliament.
At the same time, demonstrators, including activists from the Alliance for the Republic (APR), were dispersed with tear gas.
The wave of arrests also targeted several members of the collective Le Peuple, including Pape Gorgui Ndong and the rapper Abdou Karim Guèye, better known as "Xrum Xaxx".
The national youth coordinator of the APR, Babacar Selle Diagne, was also arrested before being taken to the Thionk police station, according to his entourage.
Opposition figure Thierno Bocoum was also among those arrested during this mobilization.
These arrests come amid strong protests surrounding the constitutional reform. In recent days, several political leaders and civil society actors have called on the Speaker of the National Assembly to suspend the review of the text, arguing that broader national consultation was necessary before any amendment to the Constitution.
The situation remains tense around the National Assembly, where a large security presence has been deployed as MPs continue to examine the bill.
