Des gendarmes à la 7tv, Maïmouna Ndour Faye interpellée : l’indignation des opposants
The police raid on 7TV and the arrest of Maïmouna Ndour Faye, the channel's director, are causing a stir on social media. According to Zahra Iyane Thiam, this is "a serious act that calls into question the state of our civil liberties."
For this person in charge of "New Responsibility" in the Republic, "respect for the law can in no way justify the violation of freedom of expression, guaranteed by the Constitution and regulated by the Press Code."
It specifies that an arrest warrant cannot, in itself, deprive a citizen of his civil and political rights, as long as no final court decision is rendered.
Thierno Bocoum agrees. The President of the Agir Movement declares that this intrusion of the gendarmes into the premises of 7TV "under the pretext that a program was to host Madiambal Diagne, followed by the arrest of the journalist Maimouna Ndour Faye, is a direct attack on freedom of the press and the public's right to be informed."
He points out that journalists have interviewed individuals who are the subject of international prosecutions or warrants. For example, he says, "Julian Assange gave an interview in 2011 while he was the subject of a European arrest warrant issued by Sweden."
Thierno Bocoum emphasizes that this is a "dangerous precedent." Because, the opposition leader points out, "When the police enter the studios, it is the Republic itself that goes out the window."
