Rencontre Diomaye - Députés :« On ne doit pas faire cela au Palais », la mise au point d'Ousmane Sonko
According to Ousmane Sonko, the head of state informed him of his intention to meet with the members of parliament from their majority. "President Diomaye told me he wanted to see the MPs. I replied that it wasn't a good idea," he explained. The main point of contention concerned the venue chosen for this meeting. For Ousmane Sonko, the meeting should not take place at the Presidential Palace. "We shouldn't do this at the Palace. I don't want him to think I'm coming between him and the party. He can't meet with party members without my agreement. I am the party president," he stated firmly.
Finally, the president met with coordinators. Ousmane Sonko clarified that he did not participate in the core discussions: “I didn’t attend the meeting. I simply passed by briefly. He spoke with them.” According to the PASTEF leader, some participants left the meeting with misunderstandings or disappointments. He believes the setting could have been different and more neutral. “He could have organized the meeting in a hotel or another location. And if the same things were said, it was pointless,” he stated.
Ousmane Sonko nevertheless reiterated that he knows the members of parliament well and respects their autonomy: “They have their freedom. They have entered the political fray.” For his part, the President of the Republic reportedly justified his choice with practical reasons, emphasizing that he resides at the Presidential Palace and has the prerogative to receive whomever he chooses there. Despite the various interpretations, Ousmane Sonko insists that this is not a personal confrontation between the two heads of the executive branch.
“It’s already clear to everyone. It’s not worth making a fuss about,” he asserted. He also revealed that he had spoken based on non-public contextual information. “When I spoke, I knew things no one else knew. I had seen things no one else knows. I had to speak to the activists. I’m aware of everything, but have faith in us.” In conclusion, the PASTEF president called for calm within the party ranks. “PASTEF is sometimes timid. We need to calm down and get to work. In politics, there are no miracles: you have to work.” He ended his remarks by downplaying the significance of the tensions mentioned, stating that the party had no major problems.
