Drames à l'UCAD : Ousmane Sonko assume l'ordre d'intervention mais fustige les « abus inadmissibles »
Speaking about the violent incidents at Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko stated that he had given clear instructions to ensure security, while acknowledging shortcomings in their implementation. "I gave the order to take the necessary measures, and if I had to do it again, I wouldn't hesitate. I won't let them destroy everything," he declared. However, he emphasized: "We will never use our powers against the Senegalese people."

The head of government expressed his deep sorrow at the death of a student during the unrest: “We are deeply saddened by what happened at the university, especially with the death of a student. My strong connection to young people and students is well known.” He nevertheless called for restraint in the face of emotional reactions amplified by social media: “Sometimes, we let ourselves be carried away by the emotions stirred up by social media. But a country is governed with composure.”
According to him, mass movements are difficult to manage, and intelligence indicated serious risks: "We had information that some wanted to burn down the restaurants, the library, and take the supplies needed to prepare for Ramadan." He reiterated that the social campus "is not part of the university's affiliated institutions" but constitutes a distinct neighborhood within Dakar, thus justifying the intervention of law enforcement.
Acknowledged failings and an investigation opened
Ousmane Sonko acknowledged some shortcomings, including the delay of the security forces: "Before their arrival, restaurants had already begun to be looted." However, he firmly condemned any disproportionate use of force: "We do not accept the disproportionate use of force. An unarmed student mistreated by police officers, property such as motorcycles destroyed—these are unacceptable abuses."
Regarding the student's death, he announced the opening of an investigation and the implementation of initial precautionary measures. "This is not about throwing the baby out with the bathwater by heaping scorn on the police and the gendarmerie," he added, calling for an end to any blanket stigmatization of the security forces.
Finally, the Prime Minister denounced an attempt to politically exploit the affair: "They want to know one thing: whether the idyllic relationship between Sonko and the students still exists." He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the youth: "We will continue to be open and to dialogue."
