Situation économique et sociale du Sénégal : Thierno Alassane Sall dresse un tableau sombre
MP and political leader Thierno Alassane Sall painted a particularly bleak picture of the economic and social situation in Senegal, believing that the country is going through a difficult period which is severely affecting workers and even more so the unemployed.
According to him, several key sectors are currently in crisis. “Teachers and students are increasingly staging strikes, revealing a deep-seated problem in our education system. Rural areas are experiencing equally worrying difficulties. Despite a good winter season, peanut farmers are struggling to sell their harvests, while market gardeners, lacking outlets, are forced to dump their produce. The construction sector is also going through a major crisis that threatens thousands of jobs,” declared the leader of the Republic of Values (RDV).
He also raised concerns about the country's energy supply. According to him, the strategic hydrocarbon reserve has decreased, even though the risks to supply have been known for several months, particularly with the tensions surrounding Venezuela and the growing instability in the Middle East.
At the same time, the MP claims that Senegal has met its March 2026 debt repayment deadline without any credible official communication from the authorities. "The lack of transparency surrounding this operation is all the more concerning given that the only available information comes from Togo," he declared indignantly.
Faced with this situation, Mr. Sall believes that Senegalese people are grappling with the high cost of living, unemployment, and an increasingly worrying economic and social context. "At such a critical time, they have the right to expect their leaders to fully dedicate themselves to addressing the economic and social emergencies. But the institutions that should be shedding light on these issues seem paralyzed today," he stated.
According to him, the National Assembly could have addressed these crucial issues. However, it is reportedly more preoccupied with political squabbles and displays of allegiance to the two heads of the executive branch, who are engaged in a battle for position in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
The MP also commented on the Prime Minister's public statements, which he felt were marked more by personal considerations than by genuine strategic direction. He specifically cited the Kayar deepwater offshore project, whose future remains uncertain following the successive withdrawals of BP and Kosmos Energy.
According to him, the same lack of clarity surrounds the case of the Chemical Industries of Senegal (ICS), whose concession has expired without a precise plan for resumption or production being presented.
The elected official also raised the issue of the rural electrification project led by ASER (Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency) and awarded to the company AEE Power EPC. According to him, 37 billion CFA francs have already been disbursed without any significant progress being visible on the ground, while the overall project is estimated at over 91 billion CFA francs.
Faced with the risk of losing these public resources, Thierno Alassane Sall indicates that he filed a complaint on October 16, 2025 with the Financial Judicial Pool and brought the matter before the Spanish courts; proceedings were opened on February 24, 2026 in Madrid to obtain explanations from the company AEE Power EPC and Banco Santander SA regarding the use of the funds.
“Threats, slander and attempts at diversion do not shake us. Our approach is simple: to defend the resources of the Senegalese people. True sovereignty begins with the protection of public money and the demand for transparency in every international partnership,” he declared.
The leader of the RDV believes that Senegalese people deserve truth, transparency and rigorous management of public resources, denouncing dysfunctions in several strategic sectors, particularly within Petrosen EPC, which, he says, has had three managing directors in two years.
