Élections locales : La réaction surprenante d’Ousmane Sonko sur le choix des candidats de Pastef et ses alliés
During the first installment of the "Face to Face with Activists" initiative, a regular online meeting designed to facilitate direct dialogue with party members and citizens, Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko answered several questions, notably concerning local elections, candidate selection, and the issuance of party membership cards. This new format aims to complement the party's political tours across the country by giving a voice to representatives from different regions.
Local election nominations: Sonko leaves the choice to the grassroots
Speaking from Kaolack, Khadidiatou Ly questioned the Pastef leader about the procedure for designating candidates for the upcoming local elections, asking in particular whether the choice of list leaders will fall to the party leadership.
In response, Ousmane Sonko reiterated that the party's statutes are clear: the choice must come from the grassroots, emphasizing the need to respect internal democratic principles: "The statutes state that the grassroots are chosen. It's a matter of democracy. I cannot know the best candidates better than the people."
He urged activists to prioritize consensus in each municipality, focusing on the common good, in order to avoid internal divisions. "We want each municipality to agree on its candidate so that we can present them. This democratic approach has always brought us success."
However, he acknowledges that internal elections have sometimes been necessary when consensus was not possible, which could create frustration. "If necessary, we hold elections, and sometimes this creates frustration. But this must serve as a lesson. We only mediate when the problem cannot be resolved, and we will do so rigorously."
400,000 secure membership cards announced
Responding to another question, Ousmane Sonko announced the official launch of the new Pastef membership cards, with an initial series of 400,000 secure cards.
According to him, this reform aims to create a reliable database and put an end to fictitious registrations. "We are launching secure cards with a real database, impossible to falsify. This will get rid of fictitious members." Each activist will have a six-character identification number, allowing for better organization of the party and more secure memberships.
He also announced the establishment of an online platform for purchasing the cards, specifying that the technicians will soon return to the technical details.
The Pastef leader was keen to clarify that this database has no connection whatsoever with the state's file. "This is not about creating confusion with identity cards. The DAF's file is not Pastef's platform."
He added that supervisors will be appointed in each department to oversee the process.
Renewal of governing bodies and announcement of a congress
Addressing the issue of renewing the party's structures, Ousmane Sonko explained that selling membership cards is an essential first step in organizing the party's bodies transparently. He reiterated, however, that Pastef remains, in his view, one of the most dynamic parties in the country, despite the existence of provisional structures in some areas. "The formalization of these structures will take place in the near future."
He finally announced the upcoming holding of the party's first ordinary congress, which should allow for the consolidation of the internal organization and the preparation of upcoming political deadlines, within the framework of the new "Facing the World" exchange format, which is intended to be held regularly.
