An explosion rocked the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, Texas , on Monday, March 23, causing a major fire in one of its production units.
Local authorities immediately urged residents in the surrounding area to stay indoors. All staff—approximately 800 employees —were counted.
The Valero refinery in Port Arthur is one of the largest in the United States, with a processing capacity of 435,000 barrels of oil per day . The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
