General Birame Diop on corruption: "We apply a zero-tolerance policy within our ranks."

Général Birame Diop sur la corruption:" Nous appliquons la Tolérance zéro dans les rangs"

Corruption, although regularly the subject of public debate, actually only concerns a very small percentage of agents, according to General Birame Diop who was before the deputies this Saturday, as part of the examination of his department's budget.

When questioned on the matter, he asserted that "the vast majority of officers perform their duties with integrity, loyalty, and a profound sense of duty." However, the danger remains real. "As the saying goes, a rotten potato in a sack can ruin everything. A single deviant individual can tarnish the image of an entire institution, undermine public trust, and jeopardize years of hard work and sacrifice," he lamented.

The Minister of the Armed Forces explains that the phenomenon of the strategic soldier—the one who believes himself to be isolated, discreet, and out of sight—is increasingly doomed to failure. In the digital age, everyone has a cell phone, a camera, and a means of recording and broadcasting. Even the most furtive actions can be captured and traced. What was once concealed is now potential evidence, he says.

Faced with this reality, he reassured: "The sanctions are very severe whenever evidence of guilt is established. These are not symbolic threats, but concrete disciplinary and legal measures, aimed at preserving the honor of the uniform and maintaining the citizen's confidence in their defense and security forces."

He continued: "Upstream, significant preventative work is carried out. From the training stage, the gendarmerie raises awareness, alerts, and clearly warns recruits against possible abuses linked to corruption, abuse of power, and behavior contrary to military ethics. The values of rigor, exemplary conduct, and integrity are instilled as fundamental and non-negotiable principles."

The message is therefore unequivocal: "No tolerance will be given to deviant acts. The protection of the image and mission of the armed and security forces requires collective vigilance and constant discipline."
