« Je peux faire tomber ce gouvernement» : Le coup de semonce d'Ousmane Sonko au pouvoir
The confrontation between former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has escalated. In a press statement, the Pastef leader asserted that he possesses the political and institutional means to bring down the government led by Ahmadou Alamine Mohamed Lo, while maintaining that he does not wish to engage in such a confrontation at this time.
Speaking to reporters, Sonko reiterated that his camp retains control of the National Assembly, a lever he considers crucial in the current balance of power. "We control the National Assembly, and I can bring down this government tomorrow." The former prime minister even suggested that the parliamentary majority could repeat the process as many times as necessary: "I can repeat the process every time."
A threat tempered by a call for stability
Despite this show of force, Ousmane Sonko maintains he does not want to plunge the country into an institutional crisis. "We are not trying to paralyze the country." According to him, the objective remains the continuation of the political project championed by Pastef since it came to power. "In 2029, we will continue with Pastef's plan." This statement confirms his determination to maintain his party as the main player in the political majority, despite the break with the head of state.
The Pastef president also tried to reassure everyone about his immediate intentions: “We are not going to use the National Assembly to fight Diomaye, unless he starts the fight.” But at the same time, he is already accusing the presidential camp of having opened hostilities on the institutional front. “They started by going to the Constitutional Council.” Without going into details, Sonko claims to be aware of political maneuvers targeting his camp: “We want to know what they are plotting.”
The former Prime Minister also believes he foresaw the current difficulties when he refused to present Pastef as part of a coalition in the last parliamentary elections. "It's as if I saw things coming by refusing to participate in the elections with a coalition," he said. According to him, this strategic choice now allows the party to fully maintain its political autonomy and control over the parliamentary majority.
Concluding his speech in a combative tone, Ousmane Sonko presented himself as the target of a system seeking to weaken him politically: "The conspiracy cannot succeed, even if an entire system is against me."
