Kédougou se prépare à accueillir le président Diomaye Faye : De fortes attentes exprimées par les populations
With the arrival of President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye just days away, scheduled for February 7th and 8th, 2026, in the Kédougou region, a palpable sense of excitement is building in the towns, neighborhoods, and villages. Beyond the official welcome, a wave of hope is driving the people, determined to make their most pressing concerns heard by the Head of State.
In this eastern region of Senegal, rich in mining, tourism, agriculture, and human potential, expectations are high and pressing. The inhabitants hope that this presidential visit will mark a turning point in addressing long-standing issues.
Access to electricity, an absolute priority
Despite its energy and mining potential, several localities in Kédougou continue to face frequent power outages, or even a complete lack of electrification in some rural areas. The local population wants concrete measures to be taken to sustainably improve the energy supply, which is essential for local economic development, preserving agricultural products, and improving living conditions.
Roads and opening up isolated areas
The advanced state of disrepair of several roads remains a major concern. Opening up access to villages, particularly during the rainy season, is a significant challenge. Residents hope for firm commitments to rehabilitate rural roads and tracks to facilitate trade, access to basic social services, and the mobility of people.
Youth employment and mining
Kédougou, a prime gold-mining region, sees industrial mining and traditional gold panning coexist. However, youth unemployment remains high. Many criticize the lack of direct benefits from mining on the local economy. Young people are calling for policies that promote their professional integration, better regulation of gold panning, and greater involvement of mining companies in community development.
Health and education in search of strengthening
Healthcare infrastructure is considered inadequate to meet the needs of a vast and sometimes difficult-to-access region. The population wants improved technical facilities, the deployment of qualified personnel, and the construction of new healthcare facilities.
In the education sector, residents are calling for the construction of classrooms, the elimination of temporary shelters, and the improvement of working conditions for teachers, particularly in rural areas.
Access to drinking water
In many areas, access to drinking water remains a real struggle. Women and children sometimes travel long distances to fetch it. The installation of boreholes and water supply networks is among the top priorities.
Tourism and the environment: a potential to be developed
With iconic sites like Dindéfélo, Niokolo-Koba National Park, and the landscapes of Fouta Djallon, Kédougou possesses significant, yet largely untapped, tourism potential. Local stakeholders are seeking government support to develop this sector while ensuring environmental protection, particularly threatened by certain mining practices and deforestation.
A visit full of hope
For many residents, this presidential visit is seen as a historic opportunity to reposition Kédougou at the heart of national priorities. The people hope for concrete announcements, measurable commitments, and rigorous follow-up on promises.
Beyond the symbolism, it is an expectation of territorial justice and equitable development that is being expressed throughout the region.
Kédougou therefore awaits its president with respect, hope and a clear will: to finally see its concerns taken into account for a better future.
