L'assemblée nationale vote une loi doublant les peines de prison réprimant l'homosexualité
The National Assembly voted on Wednesday to pass a law doubling the penalties for homosexual relations. These are now punishable by five to ten years in prison, in a context marked by a wave of passionate debates and a series of arrests across the country for alleged homosexuality.
The new law also includes criminal penalties for promoting and financing homosexuality in Senegal. For the text to come into effect, it must now be promulgated by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
According to the adopted text, the maximum sentence will be systematically imposed if the act was committed with a minor. Financial penalties have also been increased: fines can now range from 2 to 10 million CFA francs, compared to a range of 100,000 to 1,500,000 CFA francs previously.
However, the law provides for the punishment of anyone engaging in "abusive denunciation made in bad faith" against alleged homosexuals, in order to limit abuses.
