The Natangué People's Party (PPN) has presented its proposals for electoral reforms in view of the 2027 local elections. The party advocates in particular the election of the mayor by direct universal suffrage in two rounds and a new configuration of municipal councils, based on a mixed system combining proportional and majority.

As part of the announced political consultations surrounding the electoral process, the Natangué People's Party is advocating for an overhaul of the method for appointing local officials. Its main proposal is for the election of mayors by direct universal suffrage in a two-round system, a reform the party considers essential to strengthening the democratic legitimacy of municipal authorities and improving their accountability to the people.

The PPN also suggests a reform of the composition of municipal councils, with a balanced distribution of seats: 50% allocated by proportional representation and 50% by majority vote. According to the party, this formula would ensure both better representation of political forces and more stable local governance.

Addressing the sensitive issue of territorial reforms, the Natangué People's Party recommends that they be undertaken after the local elections of January 2027. This option aims, according to its leaders, to take into account the cultural, social and historical realities of the territories, while avoiding the tensions and conflicts likely to arise from administrative division operations.

These guidelines were outlined by the party president, Malick Guèye, during a tour he has been conducting for over a month across several departments of the country. This mobilization is part of the preparations for the first ordinary congress of the Natangué People's Party, scheduled for April 11.

On this occasion, Malick Guèye specifically addressed the party's youth, calling on them to play a central role in the national establishment of the PPN. He thus encouraged the creation of neighborhood cells in all municipalities of Senegal, with a view to expanding the party's reach and fostering closer ties with citizens.

Through these proposals, the Natangué People's Party intends to contribute to the national debate on local governance and the consolidation of grassroots democracy.
