Candidature de Macky Sall à l’ONU : Mamoudou Ibra Kane critique la position du Nigeria
Nigeria has expressed reservations about the African Union's process to nominate Macky Sall as the continent's sole candidate for UN Secretary-General. Mamadou Ibra Kane, president of the Tomorrow is Now movement, disputes this position and cites "two errors" on the part of Abuja.
The first concerns the argument of the principle of regional rotation for the succession of António Guterres. He believes that this position "obscures recent history", recalling that "the so-called principle of rotation did not prevent two children of Africa (...) from succeeding each other at the head of the United Nations", in reference to Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Kofi Annan.
The second criticism concerns the diplomatic implications of this stance. According to him, Nigeria, led by Bola Tinubu, "is weakening itself as an African giant" in light of its ambitions related to the reform of the UN Security Council.
Mamadou Ibra Kane believes that "the best thing for President Tinubu (...) is to strongly support" this candidacy, suggesting a possible "diplomatic shift in Abuja".
He also calls for continental support, stating that "all of Africa has a duty to rally behind the only son of the continent to put himself forward as a candidate."
According to him, Macky Sall's candidacy "has taken a significant lead" and "has ultimately prevailed." In this regard, he calls for "jointly building Macky Sall's candidacy and shaping the future of Africa."
