Mairie de Dakar : Abass Fall donne le coup d’envoi du vote pour l’élection du nouveau maire

On Monday, August 25, 2025, Abass Fall, Pastef party candidate for mayor of Dakar, opened the ballot by voting first, in alphabetical order. The eagerly awaited Minister of Labor and Pastef coordinator appeared before the city councilors gathered to elect Barthélémy Dias's successor as head of the Senegalese capital.

Among those present were several officials from the Alliance for the Republic (APR), including former Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, Grand-Yoff Mayor Madiop Diagne, and Yoff Mayor Issa Laye Diop, among others. The vote, overseen by the Dakar prefect and chaired by the senior councilor, Mamadou Lamine Dallo, took place peacefully, with 81 of the 100 municipal councilors participating.

Four candidates are in the running: Abass Fall (Pastef), Ngoné Mbengue (Taxawu Senegal, interim mayor), Daouda Guèye, and Mouhammed Massamba Sèye. However, supporters of Barthélémy Dias, the outgoing mayor, respected his call for a boycott, challenging the legality of the election. Dias, who has petitioned the Supreme Court to annul the election, denounces an "institutional robbery" orchestrated to remove him. The Supreme Court's decision, expected this Monday at 10 a.m., could influence the outcome of the process.

Abass Fall, although a minority on the municipal council, is banking on strategic alliances, notably with councilors from the Benno Bokk Yakaar coalition, and has promised to resign from his ministerial post if elected, a commitment intended to attract voters.

The election, under high political and legal tension, is being closely followed by political actors and observers, in a context where the Dakar town hall remains a major strategic issue.
