Malick Gakou : «Pourquoi j’ai choisi Sonko et Pastef»
In an interview with L'Observateur, the leader of the Grand Parti (GP), Malick Gakou, sheds light on the behind-the-scenes details and underlying motivations for his party's alliance and merger with Pastef-Les Patriotes. Refuting any suggestion of opportunism, he emphasizes from the outset that this historic decision "is neither a calculation nor an adaptation," but rather based on deep convictions. He also expresses his absolute trust in the Pastef leader: "Ousmane Sonko is a man of conviction in whom I place complete confidence. I believe in his leadership and his managerial abilities."
When questioned by the Future Media Group's daily newspaper about his unwavering support for the current Speaker of the National Assembly, despite the departure of many allies during his turbulent years, Malick Gakou emphasized loyalty as his guiding principle. "In politics, fidelity is a cardinal value. I have always believed that principles must be defended before circumstances," he stated, recalling that he has always considered the trials faced by his ally to be "a fight for democracy, civil liberties, and transparency." According to him, this long-standing close relationship, forged in adversity, has naturally led to a convergence of views regarding the country's future.
On the domestic front, while Pastef's absorption of the GP may have caused some discontent, the former minister assures readers of the newspaper that the move was the result of extensive consultation with the party's grassroots members. While acknowledging that such a decision could not be unanimously accepted, he dismisses any hint of a crisis. According to him, "the few reservations or disagreements expressed by some party officials, to whom I wish great success in their new venture, in no way call into question the legitimacy or relevance of this sovereign decision."
Finally, when questioned about the current political climate and the opposition's appeal to the Constitutional Council, Malick Gakou called for restraint and a sense of responsibility. Refusing to see Senegal descend into heightened political confrontation, he reiterated that "our democracy rests on adversarial debate, pluralism, and recourse to the legal mechanisms provided by law," before concluding firmly: "The interests of Senegal must always take precedence over partisan calculations."
