Assemblée nationale : Une députée interpelle Serigne Gueye Diop sur l'échec de la baisse des prix et les taxes en grandes surfaces
The Honorable Member of Parliament, Fatou Binetou Ndiaye, questioned the Minister of Industry and Trade, Serigne Guèye Diop, during a plenary session of the National Assembly as the budget for his department was being examined. The elected official highlighted "the paradox between the announcement of a decrease in food prices and the reality observed on the ground."
According to Fatou Binetou Ndiaye, "the people are not feeling the much-heralded price reductions at all." She pointed out that significant price differences for basic necessities like rice, oil, and sugar are evident when visiting various shops.
According to the MP, while there has been a decrease, "the problem lies in the lack of monitoring and control." She asserts that citizens are left to their own devices, while "some businesses set their own prices."
The elected official also denounced the taxes deemed heavy in supermarkets, believing that they directly burden households and amplify the difficulty of accessing essential products.
Fatou Binetou Ndiaye also addressed the sensitive issue of evicting street vendors. While acknowledging the need to regulate public spaces, she stressed the urgent need to find relocation solutions for these young people, who are often the breadwinners of their families. "Regulation is essential. But we must also allow these workers to continue earning a decent living," she emphasized.
