Assemblée nationale : Thierno Alassane Sall dénonce un débat « lamentable » sur l’absentéisme des députés
MP Thierno Alassane Sall strongly criticized the proposed law amending Article 118 of the National Assembly's internal regulations, which now more strictly regulates parliamentary absenteeism.
Speaking about the debate in the National Assembly, he believes the Assembly is focusing on the wrong priorities by concentrating on internal party discipline, while the country, in his view, faces more pressing economic and social emergencies. Thierno Alassane Sall accuses the government and the parliamentary majority of wanting to use this bill to "repress the opposition."
"Today, efforts are being made to repress the opposition and opposition MPs after having repressed the press and many other sectors," he said.
For him, the absenteeism reform is part of a broader political strategy aimed at strengthening institutional control. The MP believes that the real national priorities lie elsewhere, particularly in the overall functioning of institutions and the management of public policies.
He criticized Parliament for devoting time to the issue of MP attendance when other matters, in his view, deserved more attention. "The country is drowning in far more pressing issues than this debate," he declared.
Thierno Alassane Sall also broadened his criticism to include the internal workings of the parliamentary institution. He specifically mentioned the "deplorable" working conditions for members of parliament, a National Assembly budget he deemed opaque, and a lack of transparency regarding certain institutional expenditures.
He also raised questions about the salaries and benefits of parliamentary officials, as well as the conditions of their travel abroad.
"The real priorities lie elsewhere."
The MP believes the National Assembly should focus on substantive issues related to public governance. He cites, in particular, monitoring public spending, agricultural policies, and managing economic emergencies. "That's the National Assembly's priority," he asserts, regretting that the debate is centered on sanctions against absentee MPs.
