Beyond geopolitical analysis, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko spoke about the exercise of power, the ongoing "revolution" in Senegal, and the demands of a "disciplined" patriotism. His message was clear: sovereignty has a cost, and Senegal must be prepared to bear it. Since his appointment as Prime Minister, Sonko says he has fully grasped the complexity of the state apparatus. Faced with those who invoke the "reality of power" to justify concessions, he stated unequivocally: "There is no such thing as a valid reality of power; it is up to us to impose on power the realities we want." For him, power should not transform the individual; rather, it is the individual who must transform the structures. He thus urged his colleagues and the elites to ensure that the principles they defended in the opposition remain the guiding principles for their actions today.
Ousmane Sonko has made an unprecedented confession about the country's economic state, notably citing the "hidden debt." His assessment is harsh: "Senegal is going through a profound crisis, exacerbated by an unstable international context." "Many of us who chose revolution are not ready for sacrifice, and everyone is demanding immediate results." According to him, sovereignty implies difficult choices and compromises, far removed from superficial patriotism or mere "incantations."
In his international pronouncements, Sonko outlines a vision for a "New Senegal." According to him, this vision hinges on rejecting the status quo: "It's not about replacing one flag with another, one patron with another, and certainly not one form of control with another." He advocates for regional integration and a strong ECOWAS, emphasizing that no African state can exert significant influence in a multipolar world without a critical mass of geographic and demographic weight. He also addresses natural resources, arguing that mining and oil contracts must primarily benefit the Senegalese people. He criticizes agreements signed by "corrupt authorities."
Addressing the demographic issue, Sonko rejects externally imposed birth control policies. He sees African youth as a "demographic dividend," a force to be harnessed rather than a burden to be managed. "The country's future rests on a solid social foundation and genuine popular support. Without this alliance between the elites and the people, patriotism will remain an empty word."
Furthermore, Ousmane Sonko confirms that his presidency will not be one of comfort, but of structural transformation. A risky gamble, based on the conviction that Senegal must no longer ask "for permission to be sovereign, nor indulgence for thinking for itself."
