« On ne peut pas faire du Pastef sans Pastef » : Sonko s’installe au perchoir et défie l’exécutif
Elected on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as President of the National Assembly with 132 votes out of 133 cast, Ousmane Sonko immediately set the tone for his tenure. Between formal congratulations, political clarifications, and calls for institutional reform, the Pastef leader delivered an assertive speech that already outlines the contours of a new power dynamic with the executive branch.
In a chamber largely supportive of his cause following a massive boycott by several opposition parliamentary groups, the newly elected Speaker of the National Assembly first welcomed the appointment of the new Prime Minister, Ahmadou Alhaminou Mohamed Lo. He notably recalled the close professional ties that had bound them since his own time as Prime Minister: "It was I who appointed him Secretary General of the Government," Ousmane Sonko emphasized, praising the new head of government's "hard-working" nature and their active collaboration in developing the strategic frameworks of the "Senegal 2050" National Transformation Agenda. But very quickly, the tone hardened.
Addressing the members of parliament, Ousmane Sonko publicly expressed his regret that his party had not been formally involved in the consultations that led to the formation of the new ministerial team. This was a subtle but direct way of denouncing what he considers the marginalization of Pastef in certain major political decisions of the state. "You can't do Pastef without Pastef," he declared in a striking statement that immediately resonated throughout the chamber.
For the new president of the National Assembly, the mere incantation of the "Pastef foundation" in official speeches is insufficient to guarantee the political legitimacy of the majority party. While acknowledging the existence of a "false start," he nevertheless extended an olive branch to the executive branch, calling for a "responsible discussion" to ensure peaceful governance.
According to him, future decisions should focus not on personal squabbles, but exclusively on major political orientations, economic commitments, justice, improving the purchasing power of Senegalese citizens, and structural reforms. In another particularly noteworthy passage, Ousmane Sonko argued for a profound reconfiguration of the country's institutional functioning. "We can no longer have a system of hyper-presidentialism in Senegal today. The current configuration has dictated this," he asserted, delivering one of the most powerful political messages of this historic day.
