ONU : Seydou Guèye dénonce le « manque d’élégance républicaine » de Diomaye Faye face à Macky Sall
As former Senegalese President Macky Sall positions himself to run for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), his associates are surprised by the lack of official reaction from the Senegalese government. Interviewed on the "Jury du Dimanche" program on Iradio, Seydou Guèye asserted that the former head of state had, in fact, taken the necessary steps to inform the current authorities.
“President Macky Sall wrote to the President of the Republic to express his desire for Senegal’s support,” he stated. According to him, the letter was addressed to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on February 9, 2026. A month later, no official response had been received, a situation that Seydou Guèye considers inconsistent with institutional norms. “This is neither proper republican etiquette nor a gentlemanly approach between a former president and a sitting president,” he lamented.
An issue that transcends political divides
For the spokesperson of the former regime, the issue transcends internal political divisions. He believes that the candidacy of a Senegalese national to head the UN should generate national consensus. "When a fellow citizen is competing for a position that can bring honor to Senegal, the State should naturally support him," he argued.
He noted that Macky Sall's candidacy already enjoys significant support on the African continent, particularly from the African Union. In this context, Seydou Guèye questions the inaction of the Senegalese authorities: "The real question is simple: why is Africa mobilizing so massively to support a Senegalese candidate while the Senegalese state remains silent?"
The weight of national support in global diplomacy
For this close associate of the former head of state, the support of his country of origin is crucial in a diplomatic competition where international power dynamics are central. The election of the future Secretary-General will, in fact, depend on an agreement among the five permanent members of the Security Council before being submitted to a vote by the General Assembly.
While awaiting an official position from the Presidential Palace, the debate surrounding this international ambition continues to fuel the national political scene.
