Ousmane Sonko élu président de l'Assemblée nationale
It is now official. Ousmane Sonko was elected this Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as president of the National Assembly of Senegal, following a vote held in a chamber marked by a boycott from a large part of the opposition forces.
Of the 133 members of parliament who participated in the vote, the constitutionally required majority was 67 votes. The Pastef leader far exceeded this threshold, securing 132 votes in favor. The vote also recorded only one abstention and no votes against.
This historic election comes just hours after Ousmane Sonko's official return to the National Assembly, where he had re-entered his seat as a deputy in a particularly enthusiastic atmosphere, under the enthusiastic applause of the deputies of the presidential majority and many supporters seated in the stands.
Immediately after the official announcement of the results, the new Speaker of the National Assembly officially took office. Amidst a standing ovation from the Pastef-Les Patriotes parliamentarians, Ousmane Sonko took his place at the rostrum to preside over his very first session as head of the second-highest institution of the Republic.
This strategic rise to the presidency marks a major political turning point for the leader of Pastef, now installed at the head of the National Assembly after having held the position of Prime Minister of Senegal.
