Ousmane Sonko : "Pendant que je travaillais à la Primature, certains pensaient déjà au second mandat"
In a new segment of his speech delivered at Dakar Arena during the PASTEF congress, Ousmane Sonko denounced the political calculations which he considers premature while the country is facing numerous economic and social challenges.
The leader of the Patriots party lamented that some officials had begun to look ahead to the next elections, while, in his view, government action should remain focused on the concerns of the Senegalese people. "While I was working tirelessly at the Prime Minister's office, others were already thinking about a second term," he stated. Sonko also acknowledged that his commitment to running the country had sometimes created a distance with the party's grassroots members. "During this time, the activists complained about my unavailability," he confided, explaining that his priorities were then focused on implementing reforms and managing government matters.
For the president of PASTEF, the Executive's primary mission must remain resolving the difficulties that the people face daily. "The Executive must focus on solving the problems of the Senegalese people. Only then can it aspire to another term," he asserted. Calling for a clear separation between public administration and political ambitions, he urged the various institutional actors to fully assume their responsibilities without seeking to obstruct the actions of the State. "We who hold the Executive branch must work exclusively for the good of the country. Let nothing be blocked by political battles. Let everyone play their part," he insisted. Looking ahead to the upcoming elections, Ousmane Sonko stated that the final verdict will rest with the Senegalese people. "In two and a half years, the Senegalese will choose. And this time, the people must make the right choice," he declared.
In a statement that drew enthusiastic applause from the audience, the PASTEF leader reaffirmed his belief in his popularity within the country. "The vast majority of the country has chosen Ousmane Sonko," he declared, presenting himself as the custodian of a popular trust that he intends to preserve through his political actions.
