Passation de service au MESRI et au METE - Abdourahmane Diouf avertit Daouda Ngom avec humour : ''C’est à la rentrée que mon nom est devenu Dramane''

It was a humorous handover between Abdourahmane Diouf, outgoing Minister of Higher Education, Innovation and Research (MESRI), and Daouda Ngom, now the current Minister of the Environment and Ecological Transition (METE). In a relaxed atmosphere, Dr. Diouf did not fail to offer some ironic advice to his successor.

Speaking to the ministry's executives, Abdourahmane Diouf recalled the challenges of managing higher education, particularly at the start of the academic year, a real test of fire for any minister in office. "Every minister has their own event. For the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (MESRI), it's the start of the school year! You know, we pay nearly 6 billion CFA francs in scholarships each month. But at the start of the school year, that can climb to 13 billion. That's when my name, Abdourahmane, became Dramane," he said humorously, prompting laughter from the audience.

And he warned his successor, in a mocking tone: "Daouda, be careful. You too risk becoming Dève or Davido. But I know you're an engineer, you'll handle this situation well," he added.

"It's not our professional relationships that are important, it's the Republic."

Abdourahmane Diouf also took the opportunity to convey a strong message, emphasizing that it is concrete actions and the spirit of republican service that count, beyond personal considerations. "There are three things to remember: what we have done, what we are doing, and what remains to be done," he declared.

True to a philosophy of inclusive governance, he revealed that no layoffs took place during his 17 months at the helm of the ministry. He kept the secretary general and even his private secretary, who were found on site upon his arrival. "Everyone continued to work. And they also helped me, sometimes putting aside their demands to solve others' problems," recalls Dr. Abdourahmane Diouf.

The latter praised all those involved in higher education – lecturers, unions, students, and administrative staff – for their contribution to calming the university climate. "Everyone has contributed to pacifying the university," he acknowledged. "You have to work with your colleagues in a trusting manner. Because if your staff want you to be an incompetent minister, you will be."

Now in charge of the Department of the Environment and Ecological Transition, Abdourahmane Diouf says he is ready to continue his commitment, this time in contact with a staff "essentially composed of uniformed personnel."

Bon debarras.
