Post-Congrès : Alioune Tine décrypte la « figure mythique » d’Ousmane Sonko
The first ordinary congress of PASTEF-Les Patriotes continues to generate reactions from the political class and civil society. In an analysis shared on the social network X, Alioune Tine, founder of Afrikajom Center, warmly congratulated the party on the success of its congress. The human rights activist sees it as the consecration of a new generation of African leaders born from democratic crises. Deciphering the political phenomenon surrounding Ousmane Sonko, he portrays a movement that transcends the traditional framework to become a true "community of destiny and belief."
For Alioune Tine, the event held in Diamniadio was a complete success, both in form and substance. According to his analysis, this gathering transcended the simple framework of a political meeting to become "a great moment of communion, of catharsis between activists and their guests who came from all corners of the world."
He draws a striking parallel between this gathering and recent pronouncements from the executive branch. He believes that this congress constitutes "a kind of response to Diomaye's impressive speech at the celebration of Diomaye's 100th anniversary."
The collapse of the old guard and the emergence of a new generation
Alioune Tine situates the rise of Ousmane Sonko and his movement within a profound historical and sociological trajectory specific to the African continent. He sees it as "the consecration of new generations of Senegalese and African political leaders born from crises of democracy, governance, and security in Africa." This shift occurred within a fraught continental context, marked by "military coups, political authoritarianism, and political tensions and violence in Senegal."
At the national level, he explains that the disintegration of the old political class under the previous regime created an inevitable vacuum. According to him, "Macky Sall's governance, with a political coalition that absorbed all the leaders who had achieved the first peaceful transfer of power from 2000 to 2012—notably those from the Socialist Party, the AFP, Rewmi, the PIT, and part of the Democratic League—allowed for an opening." It is precisely into this political void that "the new generation of political leaders, embodied by Ousmane Sonko, rushed in."
Alioune Tine's analysis also dissects the communication and popular appeal of the re-elected PASTEF president. Ousmane Sonko is described as "the star of young Senegalese in urban areas, the suburbs, and the diaspora, who identify with his speeches, widely shared on social media." This massive support is based on a perfectly mastered visual and rhetorical communication strategy. Tine emphasizes that "the theatricality and staging of his speeches and the meticulous construction of his iconography, widely disseminated through videos and photos, ultimately create the mythical figure of the 'Guide of the Revolution.'"
From then on, PASTEF's internal workings broke with traditional party codes. For the head of Afrikajom Center, "Pastef's distinctive feature, more than a party, is that it is a community of destiny and belief, united behind the Leader, who is himself a fusion of leader and community."
Alioune Tine concludes by stating that with this event, the leader of the Patriots "has completed the construction of his electoral machine for the conquest of supreme power in 2029".
