Retour de Sonko à l’Assemblée : Adji Mergane Kanouté dénonce des « artifices juridiques »
Adji Mergane Kanouté defends the return of the now former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to the National Assembly. In a post published on her social media accounts this Monday, May 25, 2026, the former vice-president of the Benno Bokk Yakaar parliamentary group in the 14th legislature confirms the legality of suspending the parliamentary mandate of an elected official appointed to executive positions.
According to her, "the suspension of a member of parliament's mandate when an elected official is called upon to assume executive functions is a constitutionally guaranteed right." This was a way of responding to the objections raised by some opposition figures and legal experts regarding the former Prime Minister's ability to regain his parliamentary seat.
Moreover, Adji Mergane Kanouté believes that the criticisms leveled against this reintegration are based more on political interpretations than on solid legal grounds. She therefore considers that "the opposition should choose to fight on the ground and not with legal artifices."
