Samba Sy (PIT): "Notre pays est à l’arrêt. C’est ça la vérité "
Faced with the recent downgrade of Senegal's sovereign rating, Samba Sy, secretary general of the Independence and Labor Party (PIT), former Minister of Labor and coordinator of the FDR, is sounding the alarm. Asked about the government's reaction, he denounced a posture of denial and irritation. "What is quite remarkable is the government's reaction. A reaction of irritation, a reaction that mixes both denial of reality and a lack of lucidity."
To illustrate his point, he evokes a powerful image: "Someone spoke absolutely correctly, that gentleman, who, not satisfied with what the thermometer was telling him, broke the thermometer rather than try to treat his fever."
"The country is not working"
Samba Sy questions the government's optimistic announcements, particularly the 13 trillion in financing commitments mentioned at the Dakar forum. According to him, these figures do not reflect the country's economic reality. "There are announcements, there's a lot of agitation, there's speculation. But what is the reality? Our country is at a standstill. That's the truth," he asserts.
He shares the testimony of an economic operator who is considering downsizing at the end of the year, due to a lack of prospects.
"Construction sites have stopped. The RTS tower, which rose majestically from the ground, has been at a standstill for how long? This is the case across the country. The saying goes, when the building is going well, everything is going well. Conversely, when the building is not going well, everything stops."
Call for responsibility and change
While expressing his regret at seeing the country in this situation, Samba Sy criticizes the current path, which he describes as populist and hopeless:
"A path of publicity, a path of defiance, where everyone goes, it's a dead end."
His recommendation is unequivocal: We must change course completely! "When you are responsible for the fate of tens of millions of people, you must be aware that running a state requires a great deal of responsibility."
He concludes with a warning.
"If there are any strong drivers, if our economy is holding up, it can't be their fault. They have to change the course they've taken if we want Senegal to raise its head."
