"Le Sénégal est plus grand que chacun d'entre nous" : La réponse de Moussa Bala Fofana au recadrage de Sonko
Following Ousmane Sonko's June 2, 2026, statement accusing certain reappointed ministers of disregarding PASTEF's directives, Moussa Bala Fofana responded directly to his now former leader. The Minister of Urban Planning, Local Authorities, and Territorial Development asserts his complete autonomy. Placing republican duty and the national interest above party politics, he opposes the legitimacy of his conscience to the demands of the party apparatus.
The simmering tension within the ruling party has finally erupted. Acknowledging the grievances expressed by the president of PASTEF, Moussa Bala Fofana has chosen to break his silence to definitively clarify his position. "Yes, I acted freely and in a personal capacity," he immediately replied.
Far from being a rash decision or an opportunistic betrayal, the minister presents his reappointment to the government as a carefully considered moral choice. "I made this decision freely, in good conscience, without any ulterior motives," he insists, before vigorously rejecting accusations of being addicted to privilege. For him, this choice was not dictated "by distrust, nor to retain a position, much less to succumb to any temptation of power, because there is no power in being a servant of the Republic."
He admits to having acted knowing full well that he would "lose a political family, comrades in arms and face criticism, slander and insults".
Faced with pressure from his original party, Moussa Bala Fofana points out that at some point, every leader is confronted with a difficult choice that involves their personal ethics. "Between partisan logic and what I considered to be my duty to the Nation, namely to honor our part of the promises made to the Senegalese people during the 2024 campaign, I chose to continue the mission entrusted to me in service to Senegal."
For the Minister of Urban Planning, the stability of the State and the continuity of ongoing reforms take precedence over personal feelings and internal power struggles: “I remain convinced that our individual destinies, our differences, and our personal contradictions weigh little in the face of the demands of the greater good of the Nation. Senegal is greater than any one of us.” Claiming a choice guided solely by dignity and a sense of responsibility, he accepts turning his back on the applause of the grassroots: “I did not choose the easy path; I chose duty, sometimes thankless. I did not choose the comfort of popularity; I chose the continuity of public service with restraint and responsibility.”
Despite the radical political break and the end of their activist partnership, Moussa Bala Fofana refuses to give in to animosity. Reiterating his "fraternal words towards the President of the National Assembly, Mr. Ousmane Sonko," he reaffirms that the latter remains for him "an older brother, a comrade in arms, and a figure for whom I retain esteem, respect, and consideration."
“Nothing that happens today can erase this shared history or the bonds forged in sincerity, intelligence, and mutual respect,” he writes. Referring to their past work, he recalls the existence of an unbreakable doctrinal partnership: “In an intellectual endeavor on decentralization, where each of us contributed our part, we sealed a bond of knowledge.”
