« Senghor, son meilleur ami, c’était un musulman » : Fatou Diome parle de la cohabitation interreligieuse au Sénégal
In a recent interview with the YouTube channel "Prieuré Sainte Marie", the Franco-Senegalese writer Fatou Diome recounts her ethnic ties with the former Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor, and the poet-president's commitment to interreligious coexistence in Senegal.
"There is no dichotomy."
“Senghor is from the same tribe as my father… His best friend, his advisor, was a Muslim, while he is a Christian. In our culture, there’s no dichotomy. When you have Muslim holidays in Senegal, you have Christian cousins, you invite them. And for Christian holidays, like Christmas and Easter, they invite you,” the writer stated. According to her, this interreligious coexistence is “very natural” in Senegal, “because whatever the Lord may think, our maternal lineage comes first (smile).”
