100 years and one day! This Friday, May 30th, Abdoulaye Wade celebrated his 100th birthday. For the occasion, the former Senegalese president gave an interview (to be published) to Jeune Afrique.
The man who led Senegal from 2000 to 2012 addresses several topics, including the situation in Palestine, Donald Trump and the Iran-Iraq War, and Muammar Gaddafi. However, regarding current Senegalese politics and the apparent tensions between President Diomaye Faye and his former Prime Minister, now President of the National Assembly Ousmane Sonko, the centenarian chooses to remain neutral.
According to François Soudan, who interviewed Abdoulaye Wade, the PDS leader refuses to comment on current Senegalese politics. "It's a blind spot, but a deliberate one for a simple reason. Abdoulaye Wade doesn't want to interfere with the tribute ceremonies that will be held in his honor in Dakar on June 4th and 5th. They are scheduled to be attended by President Diomaye Faye," explains the editor-in-chief of Jeune Afrique.
During these ceremonies, concerts, scientific conferences and a national tribute will be paid to Abdoulaye Wade to celebrate the indelible impact he has had on Senegal during his 100 years of existence.
