Thierno Alassane Sall sur les deux ans de Pastef : "Ils ont trahi la promesse faite au peuple"
"What was supposed to be, in the eyes of many Senegalese, and even parts of Africa, the greatest political victory of the century, has turned into a profound disillusionment." This is the assessment that the leader of the Republic of Values (RDV) draws from Diomaye's two years in power.
"A victory built on inspiring promises: ethics, transparency, fraternity, equality of rights, selflessness for the homeland. So many values brandished as the foundations of a new societal project," Thierno Alassane Sall told the press.
According to him, reality quickly caught up with the rhetoric. "What is revealed today is not a governance focused on the general interest, but a small clique, incapable of agreeing on how to run the country, more concerned with seizing and maintaining power than with the fate of the Senegalese people."
An unprecedented power struggle at the highest levels of government
"For the first time in Senegal's recent history, a latent, open and deliberate war has taken root between the two heads of the executive branch. A confrontation that is not about the future of the country, nor about the expectations of students, workers or bereaved families, but about a single question: who will actually exercise power and who will be a candidate in 2029," the MP accuses.
This situation, he says, marks a serious break in Senegal's tradition of institutional stability, long cited as a model despite the vicissitudes of its political history. "As an old adage reminds us, statesmen think of future generations, politicians of their next elections. Never has this maxim seemed so relevant. Today, within Pastef, from the most educated to the most ordinary, the central debate is not the national project, but the next election," he laments.
A country at a standstill, a weakened economy
This ongoing political crisis is not without consequences, according to the MP: "Credit rating downgrades, economic uncertainty, investor reluctance—the country is at a standstill. Tourism, services, private investment—all sectors are affected." He adds that the uncertainty is total. No one knows what tomorrow will bring. And in this toxic climate, instead of getting the country moving again, the government is locked into petty political maneuvering."
Nepotism and mass layoffs
Furthermore, he mentions "the social brutality with which the State treats its own citizens. Hundreds, even thousands of employees have been dismissed from public companies and agencies, often without clear procedures, to be replaced by regime cronies." He then asks: "Where is the ethics? Where is the solidarity? Where are the promised calls for applications?"
Specific examples are cited: recruitment without job postings, the return of "friends" from France, and the sidelining of recognized Senegalese talent. These statements are made openly, sometimes even openly, in the name of political friendship. Institutions such as the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (a public financial institution), Dakar Dem Dikk (a public transport company), the Office des Lacs du Sénégal (a public water utility), and vocational training programs are mentioned as symbols of this nepotism institutionalized by Thierno Alassane Sall. Under these circumstances, speaking of the rule of law is utopian. Because without the law, the citizen remains weaker than the government.
