The National Executive Secretariat (SEN) of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) published a statement on December 4, 2025, pointing to the explosive situation that has paralyzed public universities in Senegal for several weeks.
According to the APR, this climate of tension contrasts with the progress made during President Macky Sall's term, where several measures were adopted "for the benefit of the university community," including the revaluation of the salaries of teaching and research staff and administrative and technical staff (PATS), the increase in student scholarships, the construction of new university pavilions, and the support given to the price of university restaurant tickets.
The party attributes the current protests to the issue of unpaid student grants. According to the APR, this problem was a central focus of the current majority's communication strategy when it was in opposition. The APR now accuses Pastef of reneging on its promises and betraying commitments that, it claims, helped rally a significant portion of young people to its cause.
The party founded by Macky Sall also condemned the "brutal repression" carried out against students protesting on campuses, recalling that the inviolability of academic spaces is enshrined in Law 94-79 on university freedoms. For the APR, the university should remain a protected space, a place of intellectual freedom and dialogue, not confrontation.
The APR demands urgent measures...
In its statement, the SEN affirms its support for student demands and calls on the state for the "immediate and unconditional payment" of scholarships and allowances owed. It also demands an end to "violent" security interventions on campuses.
For the opposition party, the situation in academia is just one symptom of a widespread social crisis. The APR highlights the tensions observed in the health, education, and other sectors of national life, believing that this reflects "the gravity of the crisis" the country is experiencing.
...and a call for national mobilization
The APR announces that it will act alongside other components of the opposition, including the Front for the Defence of the Republic (FDR) and various citizen movements, to mobilize the population in order to "undo this power" described as "a factor of national ruin".
