Secteur de l’Eau : le Chef de l’État renforce les réformes et accélère les projets
The President of the Republic reaffirmed the central role of the water sector in improving the well-being of the population and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. In the communiqué issued by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, February 4, he immediately commended Senegal's recognized leadership in this area, while calling for a significant acceleration in the implementation of major infrastructure projects related to water supply and sanitation.
In this regard, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye called for the effective launch of the "Great Water Transfer" project, as well as the implementation of the new Flood Prevention and Management Program. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to ensure the rigorous application of the recommendations stemming from the national consultations on the Water and Sanitation sector.
The Head of State also instructed the Ministry of Water and Sanitation to accelerate the implementation of the program for renewing boreholes and hydraulic structures, while simultaneously intensifying desalination plant projects. He further requested the finalization of supplementary reforms related to the urban and rural water supply sub-sectors, the redefinition, with a 2050 horizon, of master plans for water and sanitation, and the updating of overall governance, the economic model, and the regulatory framework for the water sector.
Furthermore, Diomaye Faye urged the Prime Minister to finalize the texts relating to the Water Code and the Regulatory Authority for the sector.
Finally, he instructed the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, in collaboration with the Minister of Energy, to ensure continuous monitoring of the progress made in fulfilling Senegal's commitments within the framework of the OMVS and OMVG projects.
