Arrestation de Maimouna Ndour Faye et de Babacar Fall : Thierno Bocoum rappelle l'épisode Sonko "alors fugitif"
In a firm statement, Thierno Bocoum, president of the AGIR – Les Leaders movement, spoke out about the arrests of Maïmouna Ndour Faye (7tv) and Babacar Fall (Rfm), which took place on October 28 and 29, 2025. These journalists were targeted in the context of their professional activity, after exchanges with Madiambal Diagne, a press boss targeted by an international arrest warrant.
Bocoum points out that, according to Article 11, paragraph 2 of the Senegalese Press Code, "journalists and media professionals have a duty to seek the truth, given the public's right to know it, whatever the consequences may be for themselves." He commends the professionalism and courage of Maïmouna Ndour Faye and Babacar Fall and believes they acted "in accordance with the mission entrusted to them by the Republic: to inform, question, and enlighten society."
In response to this commitment, he denounces authoritarian practices aimed at muzzling the press: intimidation, arbitrary arrests, and attempts at censorship. "No democracy can tolerate a power that fears the light," he asserts.
Bocoum reminds us that freedom of the press, guaranteed by Article 8 of the Constitution, "applies to everyone, including those holding provisional power or those with inflated egos." He insists: "No whim, no authoritarian reflex, no political posturing can take precedence over a freedom placed at the heart of our constitutional order."
From a legal standpoint, he recalls that "an international arrest warrant is a procedural act aimed at ensuring the appearance of an accused person before the courts" but, he specifies, "It does not suspend the fundamental rights of the person concerned, nor their freedom of expression, nor their right to communicate their version of events," he affirms.
He believes that the journalist who collects this statement is not breaking any laws. "He is carrying out the mission recognized by the Constitution and the Press Code, in strict compliance with the public's right to information," he stated.
Thierno Bocoum cites a revealing precedent. "The current Prime Minister, who was then a fugitive to escape legal proceedings, was not deprived of his microphone. The journalists who interviewed him were neither summoned nor harassed," argues the opposition figure.
"The Republic did not send the gendarmerie into the studios," recalls Thierno, denouncing the perceived worrying decline of the rule of law.
For him, "the press is not an instrument of power, it is its counterweight and preventing a journalist from questioning an accused person is to confuse justice and propaganda and to tip from the Republic into repression."
He concluded by demanding "the immediate and unconditional release of Maïmouna Ndour Faye and Babacar Fall," while also reminding everyone that "information is a fundamental right, not an offense."

La population adhere entierement à cette rigueur et cette promptitude des ministres dans le sens de retablir l'ordre.

Comparer l’interpellation de journalistes à une « tentative de censure » ou à un « recul de l’État de droit » est non seulement excessif, mais aussi irresponsable. Le fait que Madiambal Diagne soit visé par un mandat d’arrêt international n’est pas un détail secondaire. Le journaliste qui choisit de lui donner la parole dans ce contexte prend une décision qui engage sa responsabilité.
Quant à l’exemple du « Premier ministre alors fugitif », il est tout simplement pathétique. Bocoum tente de justifier l’injustifiable en s’appuyant sur une situation antérieure qui n’a rien à voir avec le cas actuel. C’est une comparaison bancale, utilisée pour détourner l’attention et alimenter une posture d’opposition systématique.
La presse a un rôle fondamental, certes, mais elle n’est pas au-dessus des lois. Et invoquer « l’ordre constitutionnel » pour défendre des actes discutables, c’est précisément ce qui affaiblit la démocratie qu’on prétend protéger.
